Welcome from the President of NYSPA

Dear Friends and Colleagues, and Members of NYSPA,

l am very excited by the programs submitted to this year’s Convention. I hope that you can join us to share learning, conversation, dancing and dining at 81st NYSPA Annual Convention, Friday-Sunday, June 1-3, at the Marriott East Side Hotel in New York. This year the theme is “Trade Skills – Inside the Treatment Room – Business Models – Outside the Treatment Room.”

When you get a minute, please scroll through the Preliminary Program and see all of the wonderful sessions that this year’s Convention is going to offer.

We hope to you will be able to join us and catch up with what your colleagues are doing and thinking about the many facets of our profession.

Antonio E. Puente, PhD
2017 President of the American Psychological Association

Antonio Puente, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and he is the 2017 president of the 125,000-member American Psychological Association (founded in 1892). The APA is the leading and largest scientific and professional organization that represents psychologists in the United States.

He has taught at UNCW since 1981. In addition to activities at UNCW, Dr. Puente maintains a private practice in clinical neuropsychology, ranging from clinical to forensic assessments. He also is a founder and co-director of mental health services at the Cape Fear Clinic, a bilingual multi-disciplinary health center serving the indigent.

Dr. Puente has been a member of APA since 1979 and a fellow of nine divisions. He has also served as president of the North Carolina Psychological Association, the North Carolina Psychological Foundation, the Hispanic Neuropsychological Association, the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the Society of Clinical Neuropsychology (Division 40 of APA).


Michael Conner Psy.D. is an engineer who became a psychologist in 1995. Dr. Conner worked at Kaiser Permanente Oregon where he completed his post-doctoral Fellowship within Kaiser's graduate medical education program. While at Kaiser he spent 7 years in variety of settings including primary medical care, regional hospitals, emergency departments, health education, and three different integrated mental health clinics. Dr. Conner created the world’s first comprehensive online primary-care mental health screening, education and referral system while at Kaiser. Dr. Conner is the architect and designer of a high performance practice management system which includes charting, care coordination, outcome measurement and analytics; data capable of providing a practice-research level of mental health documentation for individual and group practices.

Dr. Conner is a Board member of Mentor Research Institute which created the ConnectingCare model a “step-and-repeat” business and service delivery contracting model which can be implemented by mental health professionals who organize as Independent Practice Associations (IPAs). He has offered training on the topic of IPA’s at Oregon Psychological Association’s 2014 annual conference and to mental health professionals in four Oregon cities.


There will be continuing education for psychologists offered at the meeting. The New York State Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Foundation maintains responsibility for the Continuing Education program and its content.

We strongly encourage all presenters (except those submitting posters or individual papers) to apply for CE approval as it will increase the attendance of your presentation and be a service to others. Specific instructions for submitting your qualified presentation for CE are posted on the NYSPA website.


When making your conference submission, please note that presentations must be given in English.


A limited number of stipends are available to defray costs for students presenting at the conference. To qualify for a stipend, students must be the first author and presenter of a paper/poster and must be NYSPA members. Accepted submissions will be included in a September 2018 Special Edition of the NYS Psychologist.

May 2, 2018: Full Paper/Presenter Requirements, Presenter Agreement  Form, Oral Presenter 2-page CV

April 23, 2018: Hotel reservation at conference rate
