Message From NYSPA President, Roy Aranda, PsyD, JD

Embracing Diversity

Our nation has been experiencing 2016 election distress for some time due to the long, adversarial process. A Harris Poll survey conducted online on behalf of the APA revealed that 52 percent of American adults reported that the 2016 election was a very or somewhat significant source of stress. Many of us have been affected, not only by the election process but presently pursuant to the outcome.

As NYSPA President, I want to emphasize that NYSPA embraces diversity and champions the rights of all people regardless of age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language and socioeconomic status. This is one of the most important tenets of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct under its General Principles. Our society is facing trying times, but as psychologists, we must champion our professional ethics regardless of the political climate. And we need to support our peers and patients who are the victims of discriminatory practices because of who they are, and speak out loudly and be the voice for those whose voices are ignored and not heard, and for those who are unempowered and marginalized.

NYSPA Legislative Session Wrap Up

The 2016 New York State Legislative Session began on January 16th, when the Governor delivered his State of the State address and released his Executive Budget Proposal.  For the sixth consecutive year, the Governor and Legislature delivered an on-time budget. NYSPA was active in the 2016 Legislative Session and participated in its second consecutive Lobby Day on May 10th. On Lobby Day, NYSPA’s Executive Leadership, members from throughout the State, and representatives from Wilson Elser went to the New York State Capitol to advocate on behalf of NYSPA’s legislative priorities.

Prior to Lobby Day, NYSPA’s Executive Leadership met with key legislators to seek sponsorship and support for NYSPA’s legislative priorities; NYSPA was successful in obtaining sponsorship in both Houses of the Legislature for all of its priorities.  Following Lobby Day, NYSPA monitored its priority issues, and provided input as legislation moved through the Senate and Assembly.  NYSPA was also successful in opposing legislation that would harm the profession of psychology by allowing non-doctoral level psychologists to be licensed as school psychologists in New York State.

As 2016 marked the end of a two-year Legislative Session, any legislation that did not pass both Houses and is not signed or vetoed by the Governor by December 31st will need to be fully reintroduced in 2017.
